Iron Man is Dr. Doom Now?
Iron Man is Dr. Doom? Come on guys! What’s really going on? Yes, our ithinkie team received the news that Marvel has selected Robert Downey Jr. to play Dr. Doom. (Deep sigh)
We Loved RDJ as Iron Man
In our opinion, Iron Man is one of the best written, directed and cast movies that Marvel has ever made. It’s actually one of my personal favorites. Robert Downey Jr. was absolutely excellent as Tony Stark, no doubt about it. With that said, there is no reason to dilute the great RDJ with this move.
A Really Bad Idea
Hear me out. Am I saying that this role will not be delivered well? Absolutely not. Am I saying the versatile acting of Robert Downey Jr. will not be a match for this role? Yeah, right! Absolutely not. I am just saying that it is a really bad idea. Why, you ask? Ok, here it is…every time Marvel decided to cast a lesser known character in one of these great roles, it has been solid gold. This also works when the studio chooses someone for the role who may be less obvious. For example, we saw Chris Evans as Cap, Hemsworth as Thor, Hiddleston as Loki and Ruffalo as The Hulk—all great choices! This is also a move that we’ve seen work in the DCU with the casting of Heath Ledger as The Joker, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as The Flash and Michael Keaton as Batman.
This is Getting Boring
There are soooooo many awesome and fairly unknown actors out there who would rock this role of Dr. Doom. What Marvel really needs after a few recent flops…is a fresh face. Robert Downey Jr. already made great things happen in the MCU. He did it! He is Iron Man and there is no one who will say otherwise. He captured the character and excelled. Chadwick Boseman captured The Black Panther and excelled. Paul Rudd captured Ant-Man and excelled. Josh Brolin captured Thanos and excelled. James Spader captured Ultron and excelled!
It would be totally boring to recast any of the great actors again in the MCU as another big character.
Time to Tighten Up
Think About This…
With all of that talent and great supporting actors like Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman, the writing still failed us.
So what am I saying? Well it’s simple, this decision by the MCU has all of the same ingredients of disappointment. Again, it won’t be the acting that fails…not at all. What we have are the same writers from Infinity War and Endgame working on this project. Unless, we advance the writing, this will be another recipe for a plot hole disaster.
What do We Suggest?
That’s what ithinkie.
